The Better Business Bureau has now launched a major effort to warn and education small businesses about data theft, all over the country. This new BBB initiative encourages small retailers to take ownership of their responsibilities, to develop a privacy and security policy, and implement an action plan that makes privacy and data protection an integral part of their everyday business operations.

The Cadillac News has a detailed article from the President of the Better Business Bureau. Nearly one-fifth of small businesses do not use virus-scanning software for e-mail; more than 60 percent do not protect their wireless networks with encryption; and two-thirds do not have an information security plan. More than half of all small companies experienced a data security breach in the last year, yet many take data protection steps only after suffering an information security incident.
