Filing home exemption on Nevada business license more difficult

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller is aggressively targeting businesses claiming a home-based business exemption on their Nevada Business License. Miller says the filings, which are often intentionally false, are costing the state tens of millions of dollars in unclaimed revenue and placing an unfair disadvantage on businesses that comply with the licensing regulations. As of Saturday, August 6, 2011 any business applying for a license and claiming the exemption will be required to provide specific information that will verify the business’s location as a residence and net earnings of less than $27,000 per year. Letters requesting verification are being sent to the more than 60,000 businesses already claiming the exemption, and businesses that do not respond will have their license status revoked.

Time to do some planning about capital gain tax.

On January 1, 2011, the capital gain tax reduction that was signed into law by President Bush under the Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act will “sunset.” The tax rate will revert from the current 15 percent rate back to the former 20 percent capital gain tax rate that was in effect prior to 2003.

To comply with the HIRE Act, you may mark an eligible employee exempt for employer Social Security contribution in the payroll account. To mark the exemption for an eligible employee:

1. Click Employees from the top navigational bar.
2. Click the employees name.
3. Click Edit in the ‘Taxes & Exemptions’ section.
4. Click Edit in the Exemptions section.
5. Check the box for HIRE Act exemption.
6. Click Save.

Wyoming Annual Report Filings

Wyoming does have an Annual Report. They do require a list of officers and do have state tax, which is all inclusive on their annual report.

The Annual Report License Tax is $50 or two-tenths of one mill on the dollar ($.0002) whichever is greater based on the company’s assets located and employed in the state of Wyoming.

So, if you don’t have any assets or employees in the state of Wyoming the annual fee is $50.
