According to the recently release Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index, small businesses prefer their advertising to have a local focus. The Index found that 55% of business owners surveyed spent money on advertising in 2005, with 67% advertising in their local newspaper or magazine.

Results also confirm that more than half of small business owners believe that customer recommendations are more effective than paid advertising.

Many are also turning to the Internet for their information needs. Blogs and online reviews are becoming a more accepted forms of creating buzz. Of the business owners surveyed, 49% paid to advertise on the Internet over the past two years. 57% plan to increase their Internet advertising in the next two years.
