Overview of the Basic Pilot Program

Date: 07/17/2006 | Category: Business | Author: developers

Pres. Bush has spoken about the important role that the Basic Pilot Program plays in his new immigration reform package, but few employers are familiar with the program. In a nutshell, the nationwide program is a voluntary, online verification system that allows employers the ability to confirm the eligibility of new hires by checking the personal information they provide against Federal databases. If the proposed legislation passes, the program would become mandatory instead of optional.

Registration for employers is free. Basic Pilot Program benefits touted by the government include:

  • the removal of guesswork from document review during the Form I-9 process
  • allowing participating employers to confirm employment eligibility of all newly hired employees
  • improving the accuracy of wage and tax reporting, and
  • protecting jobs for authorized United States workers
