What’s in a keyword?

Date: 07/31/2006 | Category: Business | Author: developers

The word ‘Keyword’ has assumed special importance with the advent of internet and online marketing. To a layman, keyword is nothing but the search term inserted while surfing the net. For a small business owner, it means gateway to success (or failure). Keywords are all about finding your target market. For example, if you are into selling vacuum cleaners, ‘vacuum cleaner’ would be your keyword. There will be other keywords for you – if you are in LA, then your keyword may be ‘best vacuum cleaners in LA’ or even ‘LA vacuum cleaners’.

Search string used by the net surfer will decide the ranking of your site depending on how effectively and creatively you have used this keyword or set of keywords in your website. There is something called keyword density – number of times the keyword appears in your website page. Generally accepted norm is to have keyword density between 3 and 7%. Anything above 10% is treated to be search engine spamming, and your site stands a good chance of being blacklisted by the search engine.
