Startup advice: Start your own e-commerce website without a big investment

Date: 11/18/2007 | Category: Business | Author: John Vanhara

When you decide to start an e-commerce website you will need some shopping cart software. There are thousands of options available, but it is really hard to decide which one is the right one.

  •  You don’t want to be tied to one developer. Therefore I don’t recommend having custom made shopping cart. It would be also very expensive solution.
  • You can purchase a shopping cart, but there are better options available for free. Don’t spend money if you don’t have to.
  • You can use some open source e-commerce shopping cart. I personally recommend osCommerce. For example my own bicycle business is running on free (open source) osCommerce shopping cart. osCommerce has thousands of modules available made by open source community of web developers. Need online shipping quotes from FedEx, DHL, UPS? Just download them. Need coupons, discount vouchers? Yes, there is a module for that. Same for an affiliate program or many other features e-commerce website might require.
